strange weather January 15, 2006

It’s a little after noon and the temprature here on the southern part of Cape Breton Island is 15˚C. It was 0˚ (freezing point) on this day last year. Our tulip bulbs have started sprouting. I don’t know what will happen to them when we get the seasonal weather that surely will come.
It’s like this all across Canada. It has something to do with the fact that Arctic air is staying up there, allowing warm air from the Pacific to move East.
With only 4cm of natural snow this month (compared with 56cm in December), Nova Scotia’s ski hills are taking a bit of a hit. Wentworth and Martock are both closed today due to the uncooperative weather. They say that they’ll be making snow tonight when if the temprature drops, but I have my doubts. I don’t think Cape Smokey is due to open until near the end of the month anyway. I couldn’t find any information about Ben Eoin. I’m sure that they’re down as well.
